Choosing a university

Choosing a university can be tricky, so I’ve made a list of all the things I considered when I was choosing my 5 UCAS choices: COURSE: the course that the universities offer is definitely an important things to consider, as (although some courses are very similar) it is your degree that is going to lead you onto a career in the future. You should check all of the possible career opportunities from the particular course and make sure you know all of the other options too!

LOCATION: this includes the city itself, and also distance from home- you have to ensure that you know exactly how you would get to and from the university (and also consider the costs of doing so) ☺️ you will be living in the city of your university for many years so it’s important to know if it’s right for you!

CITY OR CAMPUS: I think having your preference of a city or campus university is fairly important, but not a complete deal breaker! Personally, I wanted to go for a campus university that had an accessible city, as it felt safe and enclosed on a campus, but I still wanted an aspect of the city life . ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: it’s important to check the entry requirements for your course, and discuss with teachers whether you think it’s realistic that you meet these grades, but also perhaps have an ambitious option, don’t just settle for a course with low entry requirements!! It’s sensible to have a ‘back up’ option with lower entry requirements in case of you missing a grade (although for some courses like medicine and dentistry, this isn’t usually an option so make sure you think carefully about that!) REPUTATION: I don’t think that league tables are something to go off, however if one of your chosen universities is positioned fairly low, it might be a good idea to make sure you have done all your research to make sure there’s nothing you have missed (e.g. research facilities, teaching styles) to make sure it will suit you . I hope this was useful for anyone applying to university this year or any time in the future, and I hope you end up finding your best suited universities x
