20 handy things to take to uni

When I was packing for university, I struggled to know what to take with me! I travelled there on the train with suitcases so I had to pack pretty carefully but I still wanted to have everything I needed. These are just some items that I think are quite important and/or handy and might be easy to forget! In terms of packing everything else, I think it’s useful to make a list and organise things into categories (bedding, room décor, clothes, shoes, work, kitchen utensils, toiletries etc) to make it easier for yourself.

20 random items I think are important and/or handy to take to university:

  1. Door stop – good to use during the first few weeks to meet people you’re living with!

  2. Scissors

  3. Notice board pins

  4. Laundry basket and a bag to carry laundry to/from the washers (I just used a big ‘bag for life’ and that did the job)

  5. Clothes hangers

  6. Over the door hooks for coats/bags

  7. Slippers (and shoes that are quick to put on in case of a fire alarm- I got my fluffy slippers soaked in the rain when the fire alarm went off once!!)

  8. Disposable cups and straws

  9. Antibacterial wipes

  10. Hand sanitizer

  11. Plasters

  12. A bag to carry things to/from the bathroom if you are sharing

  13. Lamp/fairy lights (my main light in my room was quite dim so I’d often have my own lamp on too)

  14. Extension lead

  15. Ear plugs

  16. USB stick/ external hard drive

  17. Important documents or photocopies of them – i.e. passport, driving license, national insurance number, student finance, UCAS letter, acceptance letter, qualification certificates

  18. Vaccination history – especially if you’re doing a course that will require you to have more vaccinations because they may require proof of what you have had already

  19. Copies of any repeat prescriptions

  20. Laundry detergent – I started off using liquid detergent but found it was easier to use pods

I hope this helps some of you starting university soon! A huge good luck to anyone starting their first year and if you have any other questions please feel free to DM me on Instagram. Jasmine x
